Brief

UMusic approached V&C Associates with an ambitious remit: identify and place a Managing Director capable of building a global retail store network from the ground up.

The position was newly created – a recognition that UMusic’s retail ambitions required a leader of significant operational depth and proven scale expertise.

The mandate carried specific structural complexity. The incoming MD would be required to relocate to London for an initial twelve-month period to establish European operations, before making a full immigration to the company’s head office in Miami, Florida. This relocation dynamic narrowed the candidate pool considerably, demanding someone with genuine international mobility alongside commercial credibility.

Critically, the client needed a leader who had already navigated the complexity of rapid retail expansion – someone who understood not just opening stores, but scaling systems, culture, and operational infrastructure in parallel with aggressive unit growth. The target: scaling from three locations to over 200 globally.

Approach

Matthew Vohs led a structured executive search methodology, mapping the landscape of senior retail operations leaders with demonstrable experience in international roll-out and brand-led store expansion.

V&C Associates focused the search on candidates who had operated at the intersection of brand integrity and logistical scale – individuals who understood how to maintain quality and customer experience through rapid growth.

The search prioritised leaders from premium and fashion-adjacent retail, where the discipline of brand-consistent store experience at scale is most rigorously tested. Sector expertise combined with international deployment experience and personal mobility were the defining filters applied throughout the long-list and short-list process.

The emergence of a standout candidate from V&C Associates’ thorough search process. In their  current role the held responsibility for all international store openings — a function that requires coordinating real estate, fit-out, local operations teams, and brand standards across diverse geographies simultaneously. During their  earlier career at Hugo Boss provided a rigorous grounding in premium retail operations at genuine enterprise scale, building the commercial discipline and process rigour the UMusic mandate demanded.

Result

V&C Associates successfully placed the above candidate as UMusic’s inaugural Managing Director of Global Retail. The appointment satisfied every dimension of the client’s original brief:

  • A senior retail leader with direct, hands-on experience managing international store openings across multiple markets
  • A candidate with premium brand pedigree – providing the credibility to set standards for a brand-led retail programme
  • Full willingness and ability to fulfil the relocation requirement: London for year one, followed by a permanent move to Miami
  • The operational mindset and process expertise necessary to scale a retail estate from inception to a global 200+ store network
  • A leader capable of building the internal infrastructure – people, systems, and culture – alongside the physical store estate

The placement demonstrated V&C Associates’ ability to identify and deliver high-calibre executive talent for complex, newly-created roles – particularly where the combination of mobility, sector depth, and scalability experience creates a genuinely narrow candidate universe.
